Abstract
The jugular foramen contains numerous critical neurovascular structures in the lateral portion of the paramedian skull base. Patients may experience symptoms secondary to both benign and malignant pathologies in this region. Because of the anatomic complexity of the region, symptoms are broad in nature. Classical management has included conservative observation for smaller lesions, and radical resection with chemotherapy and radiation for the most aggressive lesions, with considerable morbidity due to the key structures running through the operative field. Traditionally, open surgery from a lateral or posterolateral approach was the preferred route, until the advent and development of the expanded endonasal endoscopic approach. The endonasal approach allows for resection of ventral and medial jugular foramen pathology in a safe and effective manner, and offers significantly less morbidity compared to the open approach. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022
