Abstract
The Stretta procedure has established itself as a safe and effective procedure in treating patients with GERD, who prefer endoscopic intervention instead of chronic medical therapy or surgical intervention. While the technology has improved over the years, Stretta is the sole surviving endoscopic technique for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) of all those that were introduced two decades ago. The appeal of Stretta is primarily in its simplicity and high safety profile. Durability of the Stretta procedure has been demonstrated by studies that followed patients for more than a decade. Several meta-analyses have shown that the Stretta procedure significantly improves GERD-related symptoms, proton pump inhibitor consumption, and patients’ quality of life. In addition, the Stretta procedure significantly improves esophageal acid exposure and heals low-grade erosive esophagitis. The technique is now entertained in unique patient populations, like those with reflux symptoms post sleeve gastrectomy, recurrence symptoms in patients who underwent anti-reflux surgery, and elderly GERD patients who prefer endoscopic intervention. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
