Abstract
Today's health care professionals face challenges in understanding the complex nature of patient care in this diverse world (Carter-Pokras & Baquet, 2002). Providers must not only be prepared to diagnose and treat within their respective scopes of practice while addressing restriction in participation but also possess the skills to appreciate the impact of clients' and patients' culture and health beliefs on the enablement process. It is not enough for providers to simply understand how a disease or disorder affects a patient biologically; providers must recognize how it influences engagement in activities of daily living and quality of life (Kumagai & Lypson, 2009). Furthermore, factors such as health disparities, low English proficiency, and sociocultural beliefs complicate the knowledge and understanding providers need in order to successfully identify and treat the needs of patients (Bass-Haugen, 2009; Brach & Fraserirector, 2000).
