Abstract
The anatomy and embryology of the diaphragm is important for thoracic surgeons. The diaphragm can provide important surgical landmarks and anatomically divides the human body into abdominal and thoracic cavities. Furthermore, a basic understanding of diaphragmatic embryology is helpful in understanding diaphragm anatomy and the pathogenesis of congenital diaphragmatic hernias. Finally, an intimate knowledge of the phrenic nerve course is helpful in thoracic surgical procedures. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.
