Abstract
Surgical management of brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) is one of the most challenging interventions in neurosurgery. Among available treatment modalities, including endovascular treatment and radiosurgery, surgical management is the most definitive treatment option to prevent AVM expansion and spontaneous rupture. Perioperative and anesthetic management is optimized when the anesthesiologist is familiar with the strategic goals of therapy and clinical considerations that are unique to AVM management. This chapter summarizes these topics and discusses specific neuroanesthetic issues regarding the care of these patients. Although the fundamentals of providing perioperative care are similar to those for other neurovascular conditions, there are some important considerations unique to brain AVMs.
