Abstract
This chapter describes pulmonary drug delivery as a developing technology in which drugs are inhaled through the lungs and enter the bloodstream through the alveolar epithelium. This is a non-invasive, alternative approach to the parenteral route and has many advantages. The delivery device plays a major role in the efficiency of pulmonary delivery. Some of these delivery devices include nebulizers, metered-dose inhalers, dry powder inhalers, and soft mist inhalers. The choice of a device depends on the drug to be delivered and the formulation, the desired site of action, and the pathophysiology of the lungs.
