Abstract
This chapter reviews studies on the effect of aquaculture sounds from pumps, generators, and other equipment on the development, physiology, and behavior of fishes. The chapter also examines select studies using boat playback sounds, as these studies can still inform understanding of noise impacts on commercially important aquaculture species. Anthropogenic sound can have a direct effect on the target species being reared in aquaculture facilities, including negative impacts on embryonic development, sensory function, and stress. Hatchery sounds can also impact critical behaviors such as predator avoidance or parental care, which in turn can adversely affect subsequent generations. The goal of the chapter is to provide a scope of the wide range of environmental impacts unmitigated noise has on fish populations.
