Abstract

Connection Academic Libraries Library Science

In response to high levels of stress and limited access to wellness resources among professional health sciences students on a new satellite campus, the Health Sciences Library partnered with Student Life to create the Cura Corner: a permanent, evolving space – in a literal corner – dedicated to holistic student wellbeing. Grounded in the Jesuit value of cura personalis (care for the whole person), this initiative provides take-what-you-need items, a collection of books and wellness equipment, like under-desk ellipticals, and community-driven content that fosters support across the 8 Dimensions of Wellness. Students have shared the Cura Corner helps them feel seen and valued, which leads to better academic outcomes and cultivating a positive campus climate. As a grassroots, librarian-led project, it exemplifies how academic libraries can respond to complex student needs with care by bridging information access to university support units, local organizations and agencies, and credible sources. Now in its fifth year, the Cura Corner has become a defining feature, enhancing library visibility, encouraging community information-sharing, and even inspiring research and curriculum. This chapter will explore how the initiative supports student flourishing and offer a replicable model for other academic libraries to demonstrate their roles in shaping resilient learning communities and belonging.
