Abstract
Chemicals derived from plant sources have been used since prehistoric times for the treatment of diseases. Based on the prevalence of brain diseases such as Parkinson’s, dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and epilepsy, both preclinical and clinical studies using natural phytochemicals have been vigorously pursued in the search for more effective therapies for these diseases. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder that affects motor function. Symptoms of PD typically include uncontrolled tremor while at rest, bradykinesia, and rigidity. Dementias are brain diseases most notably characterized by a gradual decline in memory. Extracts from sage plants have been used to treat a variety of diseases and ailments in traditional medicine. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by loss of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Epilepsy is a group of neurological disorders defined by epileptic seizures.
