Abstract
This chapter explains the different types of money disorders and related financial behaviors. Money disorders are associated with money beliefs. Money scripts are patterns of financial beliefs, which can be assessed to understand and predict financial behaviors. Financial planners can assist in the identification of potential disordered money behaviors and can help a client move toward increasing awareness around their behaviors and their readiness to change. This can be done through several methods, including assessment and motivational interviewing. Active listening involves body language and reflection. Body language begins even before the client has entered the meeting room. The planner should be prepared, relaxed, and ready to concentrate on the client. The process for integrating financial psychology into financial planning is growing in popularity. Individuals who exhibit beliefs associated with money worship, money status, and money avoidance scripts are significantly more likely to engage in compulsive buying behavior and have lower levels of net worth and income.
