From the mid-sixteenth century to the present the Society of Jesus has established works that seek to accomplish the foundational aims that the Society drew from the graces that God gave to St. Ignatius of Loyola. The missionary impulse—spreading the Gospel to the “ends of the earth”—the imperative of proclaiming the Word in various ways; celebrating the Church’s sacraments; enabling individuals, families, cities, nations, and the world itself to seek reconciliation; and helping humans discover what joy God has in mind for each one and for all together were outlined as the purposes of the Society in the
