Abstract
Hyperlipidemia is a potent risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) among all racial/ethnic groups. However, there are certain racial/ethnic differences in ASCVD prevalence and in lipid profiles. Therapeutic lifestyle changes, statins, and other lipid-lowering therapies are effective for improving lipids and for ASCVD primary and secondary prevention. This chapter describes unique aspects of ASCVD risk and lipid profiles among various racial/ethnic groups, discusses the use of current and emerging lipid-lowering agents in these populations, and highlights the impact of the social determinants of health on racial/ethnic differences in ASCVD risk and mortality.
