Abstract
Madison's focused, five-chapter study examines church discipline cases in Baptist congregations in North Carolina and South Carolina between 1760 and 1830. Informed by historical scholarship beginning with Anne Firor Scott's study of elite women and their resistance to church discipline (The Southern Lady, CH, Mar'71), Madison examines the non-elite women of southern frontier churches.
