Before reading the eight individuals' stories, it is important for the reader to understand some key terms that ground the study and appear in themes throughout the book: phronesis, person (not individual), and strangerhood. [...]Phronesis is "the capacity to discern a practical course of action, one that preserves noble or ethical values, in unusual or complicated situations" (p. ix). While not an exhaustive list, the following perspectives are found within this book (illustrative but not comprehensive listing): *Theological (e.g., Thomas Merton) *Philosophical (e.g., Maxine Greene, Simone Weil, Iris Murdoch, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ann Mongoven, Elias Baumgarten) *Psychological (e.g., Barry Schwartz) *Rhetorical and Communication Studies (e.g., Kenneth Burke, Michael Hyde) «Political Statesman (e.g., Vaclev" Havel) *Black Feminist Studies (e.g., Kimberlé Crenshaw) Folklore (e.g., Burt Feintuch) *Social Justice (e.g., Karen Tracy, Martin Luther King, Jr.) *Activist (e.g., Cornel West) Regardless of the reader's preferred disciplinary focus and with no disrespect to the author's reflective analysis, the "stars" of the book are found within the ethnographically rich case studies which comprise the book's eight chapters.
