Abstract
The design of surgical simulator systems to train residents in orthopedic surgery using emerging low cost technolog platforms is the focus of discussion in this paper. Training simulators have been developed using Microsoft HoloLens (TM) and HTC Vive (TM) using Leapmotion (TM). Further, the design of an innovative green screen based environment in which the users can visualize and interact with real world objects in the virtual environment is also outlined. The simulation based training involves an orthopedic surgical process called the LISS (Less Invasive Stabilization System) plating surgery which is used to address fractures of the femur bone. The emergence of such recent technologies holds the potential of building orthopedic surgical training simulators at a lower cost (when compared to more traditional immersive technologies).
