Abstract
A new type of political culture, new fiscal populism (NFP), is increasing in visibility in the US. Proponents are socially liberal, fiscally conservative, populist individuals, who favor efficiency in government. Conditions favoring such tendencies include higher income & education, fewer social hierarchies, Protestantism, a professionalized welfare state, weak political parties, & powerful mass media. Evidence of NFP among US & French mayors is presented, based on survey data.
