Abstract
Medical procedures and the healthcare setting can be anxiety provoking and difficult experiences for the pediatric patient. Healthcare workers have the opportunity to promote positive experiences in the healthcare setting with the use of nitrous oxide inhalation gas. Inhaled nitrous oxide gas can be used for mild sedation by providing sedative and anxietolytic properties, thus lessoning the anxiety or painful procedures. Nitrous oxide can be administered by trained nurses in the outpatient setting to promote better experiences for the pediatric patient for minor procedures such as, but not limited to, venipuncture, PICC line placement, and dressing changes. I am proposing to develop a nitrous oxide program proposal to gain physician and stakeholder approval in order to get support & approval for the addition of nitrous oxide inhalation in pediatric specialty outpatient clinics at a large Midwest health care system.
