Abstract
This QUAL-quan concurrent nested design study sought to reimagine the Ignatian Leadership Model by introducing leaders in Jesuit higher education to contemplative practices rooted in sustainability to discover if these techniques develop one’s “ecological self” connecting them more deeply with nature. This connection can support and accelerate a leader’s commitment to caring for our common home, the vision set forth in Pope Francis’s Laudato Si and the Jesuit’s Universal Apostolic Preferences. This study found the Ecological Examen, loving kindness meditation, and shinrin-yoku were all effective contemplative practices for deepening the “ecological self,” but were useful in unique ways. In addition, the results of this study support and enhance Macy’s Work that Reconnects by adding a foundational step called learning to be present. This research demonstrates that building a habit of reflection over time is essential in enhancing the earth-human connection. Finally, results of this study were used to reimagine the Ignatian Leadership Model, redesign the Ignatian Leadership Program, and provide a roadmap for launching the Ignatian Leadership Program for Sustainability across the network of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.
