Abstract
Neonatal hypoglycemia is the most frequent metabolic disorder experienced by newborns after birth and is the leading cause of admissions in the neonatal intensive care units (NICU). If hypoglycemia is not properly diagnosed and treated it could lead to brain damage and possible poor neurodevelopmental outcomes in the future. Medical institutions normally manage hypoglycemia by encouraging early breastfeeding, giving supplementation formula feedings or by starting a peripheral IV to administer dextrose 10%. If an admission into the NICU is required, there is a separation of mothers from their babies that could impact successful breastfeeding and bonding. There is no general consensus regarding the definition of neonatal hypoglycemia or at what level or duration of neonatal hypoglycemia will cause neurological complications. Oral 40% glucose gel provides a simple, safe, inexpensive, and non-invasive treatment option for neonatal hypoglycemia.
