Abstract
In primary care, only 50% of adolescents with depression are diagnosed prior to adulthood. As many as two out of three depressed adolescents are not identified by their primary care provider and treatment is not received. The participants of the study are adolescents aged 12 to 18 years of age. Adolescents are screened for depression during sports/activity physicals using the PHQ-9 tool in a rural primary care clinic. There were 31 adolescents screened with scores ranging from 1 to 10 and a 3.2% positive depression screen of this adolescent population. Sports/activity physicals is a time that adolescents visit their primary care provider annually and the PHQ-9 can easily be implemented.
