Abstract
Pneumococcal disease affects thousands of adults greater than age 65 every year with high morbidity and mortality. Increased vaccination rates are a major objective of the Healthy People 2020 campaign in the United States, yet current immunization rates fall far short of the goal, thus this should be an area of interest to primary care providers. Through this process improvement project, the rates of pneumococcal vaccination of adults greater than age 65 were assessed in four rural Minnesota clinics prior to and following the implementation of a quality improvement project using a recall/reminder system and designated vaccination clinic. This proved to be successful, with a 23.3% overall increase in pneumococcal vaccination rates.
