Abstract
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection can lead to HPV-related diseases, including cancers. Up to 80% of individuals will be exposed to HPV in their lifetime. Annually, HPV infections affect 14 million people, with more than half among adolescents and young adults. The HPV vaccination series is cancer prevention, yet the HPV vaccination rate is well below the targeted adolescent rate of 80%. Provider knowledge of HPV, the vaccine, and how to address barriers to the vaccine have been identified as factors influencing vaccination rates. The purpose of the DNP project was to develop an online continuing education course for healthcare clinicians to improve knowledge related to HPV, HPV-related disease and the HPV vaccine, and determine a potential change in practice. The course was developed using the Canvas Learning Management platform and distributed to health care providers and students. A survey evaluation of the course demonstrated knowledge gained through post-module quizzes. Course design evaluation scores indicate high acceptance of the course methodology. In addition, 90% of participants indicated a future practice change as a result of completing the course. The online methodology demonstrates to be a cost effective and efficient platform to increase knowledge of HPV and HPV vaccination.
