Abstract
Breastfeeding is the ideal method of feeding an infant, and supporting and promoting breastfeeding is a public health matter. Many initiatives towards exclusive breastfeeding have been made, but improvements can still be had. The benefits of breastfeeding are widely recognized; however, the difficulties with breastfeeding are not. Early breastfeeding support has proved to increase the breastfeeding success rates insurmountably; yet, help is not always uniform. To improve the breastfeeding experience, mothers should receive standardized care from lactation nurses. In this QI project, lactation questionnaires for breastfeeding mothers and educational packets for lactation registered nurses (RNs) were developed. Breastfeeding knowledge of lactation registered nurses was assessed in pre and post education questionnaires. The overall knowledge scores increased from 56% to 74% after the educational session. The RNs were 100% satisfied with the new questionnaire. To adhere to the recommended breastfeeding guidelines, continued lactation support must be had.|Keywords: breastfeeding, lactation consultant, breast milk, support, infant, health
