Abstract
The primary purpose of education is to develop the individual to his fullness. This development meets not only man's immediate purpose, hut his ultimate purpose which is to attain eternal life.|The intellect of the youth must be exercised to know and to possess the truth; his will must he motivated to seek the greater good; his physical powers must he developed in harmony with his intellectual and moral life. The youth must be educated socially and civically that he may know how to live with others, recognizing his duties as a member of the family, the community, the nation and the world. Most of all he must be taught that he is a child of God with an immortal destiny which is never to be lost sight of or placed in a position of secondary importance. |Because of these objectives, the Catholic Church maintains her own schools. She believes that if the whole person is not educated, he is going to he at a disadvantage all his life.|The study of the Catholic high schools of the Archdiocese of Dubuque was carried out in order to determine how fully secondary schools are carrying out the objectives of Catholic education,. The emphasis has not been on the teaching of religion nor on the moral development program of the schools, hut rather on the professional efficiency of the organization and the curriculum,, The study was made with the ultimate purpose of recommending school reorganization and consolidation.|To get a true picture of the Catholic high schools of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, a survey was made in order to study their history, growth and present status. Through the information received, an effort was made to determine what trends are most evident in the Catholic high schools of the Archdiocese and what predictions might be made. Information in the survey included enrollments, coeducational development, date or origin, accreditation, classification, personnel, curriculum and textbooks, financial support and supervision.
