Abstract
The object of this study is to determine the thermodynamic properties, that is, the heat of reaction, delta H, the free energy change, delta F, the entropy change, delta S and the equilibrium constant, K, for the reaction |2H2O + A1 -----> A102- + 4H+. |This can be accomplished through potentiometric methods since the bridge between thermodynamics and electrochemistry exists in the equation |delta F = -nFE, |where n equals the number of electrons transferred in the reaction, F is equal to the Faraday value and E equals the measured potential. Studies of this nature are important because they enable us to measure directly the changes in free energies and entropies of electrolytic solutions which do not behave as ideal solutions.
