Abstract
Thermodynamics is an experimental science that describes the macroscopic properties of materials without reference to their internal structure. The field of thermodynamics is divided into two main classifications, equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Equilibrium thermodynamics describes systems in equilibrium states or undergoing transitions from one equilibrium state to another by a succession of equilibrium states, i.e., reversible processes. Non-equilibrium thermodynamics provides a general structure for the macroscopic description of irreversible processes.
