Abstract

Though cinchophen was first synthesized in 1887 by Doebner and Giseke, it was not until 1908 that Nicolaier and Dohrn introduced it into medicine under the trade name of Atophan. For a great number of years, it was regarded as the drug of choice in the treatment of gout and, as a matter of fact, is still championed by some physicians.
