Abstract

Everyone is familiar with phase transitions--the common experiences of melting, freezing, boiling, condensing. However, explanations of these phenomena from the first principles of statistical mechanics still presents a major challenge to the theoretical physicist. The statistical mechanics procedure involved in explaining phase transitions is well understood.
