Abstract
The purpose of a preface is to orient the reader with the material that is to follow, and it is with this in mind that I would like to point out to the reader the scope of this thesis. | My work during the past year consisted mainly in showing that the elevated blood pressures and heart rates of dogs on high-caloric, high-carbohydrate diets could be lowered with iao-calorie high-protein diets. This data is to be found in Chapter VI. | Since this work was a continuation of work that had begun three years earlier, it was deemed necessary to include much of the earlier work in order to give proper perspective to the thesis. The first five chapters consist, for the most part, of material which has been the work of my co-workers, C. M. Wilhelraj , E. B. Waldmann, and T. F. McGuire, during the previous three years. | The Introduction is a sketch of the History of Blood Pressure, and the Blood Pressure Picture of Various Peoples throughout the world. | In Chapter VII, I have attempted to draw some conclusions as to the possible mechanisms involved in the cardiovascular responses to the different dietary regimens.
