Abstract
".... I vow for life poverty, chastity, Obedience and to EMPLOY MYSELF IN THE INSTRUCTION OF YOUNG GIRLS." These solemn words recalled from the formula of the vows of religion were the source of inspiration for incorporating into a Master of Arts thesis, the reason why Ursulines of the congregation of Paris, the oldest teaching order of women in the Catholic Church, pronounce a fourth Vow--the Vow of Instruction. a fourth vow is not uncommon in the Catholic Church but it always remains interesting to inquire why a particular congregation adds an additional vow to the three customary ones. This explanation the writer will give and will expound the reasons for, and the history and implementation of the FOURTH VOW in the Ursuline Order.
