Abstract
In March 1776, prior to the Declaration of Independence, the Secret Committee of Correspondence sent Silas Deane to France as commercial agent to secure aid for the Colonies. After July 4, 1776, he was appointed to serve with Benjamin Franklin and Arthur Lee as a diplomatic representative. He was recalled in March 1778, charged with misconduct. |This paper purports to follow Deane’s activities in France and his efforts until 1781 to secure a full hearing by congress on the charges responsible f or his recall.
