Abstract
Over fifty years elapsed between the discovery that a crude antral extract could increase the acid content of the stomach and the characterization of the specific secretory hormone, gastrin. | Gastrin was discovered to have a spectrum of actions upon the gastrointestinal tract. Vizi et al. produced direct evidence that gastrin caused the release of acetylcholine from Auerbach's plexus of guinea pig terminal ileum which, in turn, caused the muscle to contract. The purpose of this study was to verify the findings of Vizi et al. and to describe the mechanism and sites at which this action of gastrin was mediated.
