Abstract
Similar to the concepts of electrolytic behavior among particles of low molecular weight, there exists a study of such behavior among particles of high molecular weight. Such particles are called macro-ions or polyions and their electrically neutral counterparts macromolecules or polymers. | This electrolytic behavior of polyions has been the subject of many papers which deal with attempts to calculate the polyion expansion due to electrostatic and ionic interactions. Some of these papers have resulted in relationships which predict, to varying degrees of accuracy, the actual expansion of the polyion. The investigation reported in this paper seeks to utilize experimental expansion data for polyacrylic acid (FAA) in an attempt to achieve better understanding of poly- electrolytic behavior.
