Abstract

United States--History
John Tyler's elevation to the presidency, upon the death of President Harrison on April 4, 1841, caused much speculation as to the policy he would pursue. "His Accidency", as he was later dubbed by the Whigs, was a strong-willed strict-constructionist of the Virginia school with many Ideas that ran counter to those of Henry Clay on the essentials of the Whig policy.
