Abstract
Occupational therapists in clinical practice with the aging population need to address all aspects of activities of daily living intervention related to the elderly mentioned in the American Occupational Therapy Associations (AOTA) Uniform Terminology. These activities include the area of sexual expression. Sexuality is a topic that may be uncomfortable for many. Societal values tend to perpetuate myths linking sexuality with youth. To dispel these myths and to facilitate the student's comfort level an educational module was developed including both didactic and experiential material which supplements the former geriatric course content. Its purposes are to: (1) familiarize students with normal sexual changes with age and psychological factors affecting sexuality; (2) help dispel common myths about sexuality; (3) understand the occupational therapists role with sexual counseling and education; and (4) provide treatment suggestions for working with individuals with disabilities and chronic conditions which can impact sexual functioning.
