Abstract
To determine if fat tissue inflammation correlates with daily PA in postpartum Latinas. Madres para la Salud is a prospective, randomized trial exploring the effectiveness of a culturally specific social support intervention using moderate-intensity PA to reduce body fat, systemic and fat tissue inflammation, and depression symptoms in postpartum Latinas. PA was assessed at baseline with the ActiGraph GT3X accelerometer, worn for 7 days. PA intensities were determined from sedentary to vigorous using Freedson's and Matthews' cut-points. A subcutaneous abdominal fat biopsy and a blood draw were performed on a subset (n=15) of participants. Daily proportion of light PA (39+ or -9%) correlated negatively (r=-0.98, p<0.001) with sedentary time (58+ or -10%). Fat tissue mRNA expression levels, but not plasma concentrations, of IL-6 (3.8+ or -6.8 Relative Units), IL-8 (1.7+ or -1.6), and TNF- alpha (0.9+ or -0.2) correlated with sedentary time (r=0.47, p=0.08; r=0.7, p=0.004; r=0.55, p=0.04, respectively) and inversely with light PA (r=-0.51, p=0.05; r=-0.75, p<0.001; r=-0.59, p=0.02, respectively).
