Abstract
Past research suggests that the relative lack of skills among workers retards geographic mobility. This relationship seems operable within all occupational categories. The highly skilled find their services in demand by other firms and are able to advance their careers by changing employers, frequently with a change in geographic location. However this study contends that past research has failed to recognize the fundamental differences between two types of skills - general and specific. The possession of each of these types of skills affects geographic mobility differentially and the failure to account for this difference has biased the results from past studies. -from Author
