Abstract
Objective: In this study, we assessed the implementation of tobacco use policies, the offering of tobacco cessation services, and the awareness of availability of tobacco cessation resources by Mississippi behavioral health and substance abuse facilities. Methods: Behavioral health and substance abuse treatment facilities were identified from the published Alcohol and Drug Prevention and Treatment Resources Directory (ADPTRD) and a 52-question survey was electronically disseminated to 43 identified facilities. Results: Ten facilities responded (23.3%). Tobacco use policies were in place at 8 facilities, but most were not tobacco-free (70%). Additionally, only 3 offered cessation services. The barriers to implementing a tobacco use policy and offering cessation services were lack of resources and lack of patient demand. Conclusion: A stronger governmental policy mandate against smoking in this type of facility and expanded funding for tobacco cessation treatments would likely result in increased compliance.
