Abstract
The article focuses on planning for disasters and system failures in benefits system databases. Enacted in 1996, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is designed to guard the privacy of an individual's protected health information (PHI). Protecting this information includes establishing and implementing policies and procedures for responding to an emergency that damages systems containing electronic PHI. HIPAA security measures cover a range of information technology (IT) provisions that go beyond just backing up data.
