Abstract
If one were to assemble a list of the few greatest conflict-of-laws (or “private international law” as it is known on the other side of the Atlantic) scholars of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, I would immediately ignore any list that didn’t include Professor Peter Hay. If one were to assemble a list of the greatest American comparativist scholars (particularly, but not exclusively, with the European Union), a list that did not include Prof. Hay, I would similarly ignore. For an example of his multinational influence, consider that his book The Law of the United States – An Introduction is available in English, German, and Chinese. What follows from this Venn diagram is that Prof. Hay falls into a very small group and his great achievement has been to make conflicts law outside the United States more comprehensible to U.S. scholars and vice-versa.
