Abstract
This work explores historical notions of design, teleological theories, and the origins of the anthropic principle in modern physics and cosmology. Given design arguments from history like natural theology and intelligent design, this paper reviews the scientific literature for evidence for fine tuning and design in nature including recent particle physics and cosmology results. Although the Universe appears fine-tuned in many ways, this work concludes that science at this date cannot settle the question of design, thus refuting the claims of many popular proponents of intelligent design. Design remains an article of faith that cannot be proven scientifically, though it is consistent with modern science. This paper also raises concerns about intelligent design claims and methods and the proper relationship between science and religion.
