Abstract
Head lice is one of the most common contagious diseases in the United States. Children are most likely to contract this infestation at the beginning of the school year. It is easily identified and treated with nonprescription products. In addition to drug treatment, clothing, bedding, hairbrushes, toys and the environment must be treated in order to avoid reinfestation. There is usually a sense of shame and revulsion on the part of adults due to the number of myths associated with head lice, including the persistent belief that only 'dirty' people get head lice. Pharmacists can provide a significant public service by educating patients to the truth about head lice.
