Abstract
This article is the first segment of a two-part series discussing teaching negotiation online. As higher education increasingly incorporates technology in the classroom and embraced online learning, the question arises of how the topic of negotiation can be taught vie technology, and what must an instructor consider along the path from the traditional to the online classroom.|This article, Part I, surveys the rise of distance and online learning in general and the inroads that such educational innovation has made in the realm of negotiation teaching. We discuss institutional and personal obstacles and resistances successful online teaching and how to deal with them. Next we show how the online environment can support different modes of negotiation teaching, including the experiential elements of simulation and role play.
