Abstract

Computers Economic aspects Hospitals Information management
A growing number of hospitals are installing point-of-care (POC) computer systems in their intensive care units (ICU), believing that this will help enhance hospital competitiveness by raising nursing productivity and reducing nursing costs. A study of the economic impact of a POC system installed in the ICU of Bishop-Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, NE, however, reveals that the expected cost and productivity benefits of such equipment were not realized.
