Abstract
The understanding of automated systems shared by two or more organizations or interorganizational systems (IOSs) is necessary for a better grasp of the workings of a special kind of IOS called the electronic data interchange (EDI). EDI became a mainstay technology in the 1990s and has been enormously helpful in enabling companies to strategic competitive advantage. However, it has not experienced widespread adoption. Primary data gathered from 10 firms that use EDI are used to determine the advantages and disadvantages of such systems and barriers to their implementation.
