Abstract

Examines the ways in which three 19c social theorists, Herbert Spencer, Ludwig Gumplowicz and Georges Vacher de Lapouge, responded to the challenge of demonstrating a process in social and psychological evolution that was analogous to the Darwinian world-view. Discloses some significant facets of the theories under consideration that are of general interest to the history of the social sciences.
