Abstract
According to the October 17 College Bulletin, the 1949 summer session was one of the best attended in the college's history and included, in addition to Qutb, a number of international students. According to Qutb, Greeley's pastors competed among themselves for congregants in much the same way that store or theater managers competed for customers. According to Qutb, America sought to gain influence in Egypt by propogating what he called `American Islam', that is, a spurious form of Islam that did not challenge the tyranny of the status quo but rather served the purpose of the United States by keeping communism at bay (Qutb 1952, 713-15). Qutb's jailing, which had commenced even before he was formally sentenced, was the most harrowing experience of his life. [...]he was consigned on 3 May 1955 to the prison infirmary on account of his worsening health, he suffered beatings and abuse at the hands of his jailors.
