Abstract

Wole Soyinka was the first African writer to win the Nobel prize in literature, in 1973. A response is made to critics who feel that Soyinka's work is not truly African & that he advocates adoption of a "Eurocentric" view of Africa. Narrative devices used by Soyinka are discussed. Soyinka describes an Africa that cannot be understood solely by reference to its past. He defends basic human rights & African values. 15 References. B. Annesser Murray
