Abstract
"Here's the Real Trouble with Experts!" answers this question: Does it seem that experts have become a much bigger problem than they used to be? It seems so to me, and this piece explores what I see as the ten principal reasons experts are presenting greater problems for the judicial system than ever before: 10. Experts make mistakes. 9. Jurors are less able. 8. Everyone is a victim. 7. We all need forgiveness. 6. False experts are everywhere, and we are getting used to and immune to them. 5. Real experts are everywhere, and real expertise is a big business. 4. Arithmophobia drove us to law school. 3. We keep changing the words. 2. Jurors expect experts and they punish those who don't provide them. 1. One generation's schmexpert is the next generation's expert.
