Abstract
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a chronic progressive disease involving gradual loss of motor and nonmotor function (Politis et al., 2010) and effects 100 to 200 per 100,000 people (Tysnes & Storstein, 2017). Individuals who are diagnosed with PD could have a variety of symptoms including impaired speech, swallowing, limb function, gait, balance, and impaired function necessary for activities of daily living (Fox et al., 2012). Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) BIG is a treatment approach used in occupational therapy to treat specific PD symptoms related to deficits in movement patterns, decreased postural control, and decreased gait and stability (Millage et al., 2017). LSVT BIG is focused on high-amplitude movements and is characterized by multiple repetitions, high intensity, and increasing complexity (Ebersbach et al., 2010). This critically appraised topic further examined the effectiveness of a LSTV-BIG program in adults with PD. It was found that LSVT-BIG significantly improved functional mobility in patients with PD.
